Number lines and money

In maths we have started using number lines to help our counting. We have learnt that the number line is our "friend". As we do more and more maths, we will see that number lines can be used for all sorts of maths.

Here we are using a big number line on the playground to add two numbers together by counting on (or in this case, jumping on!)

We have also been learning about coins and money. Mums, Dads, Grandmas and Grandads - this is something that you can really help us with at home. We have to learn that there are only certain coins - because there is no 4p coin, for example, we have to find another way to pay for something that costs 4p. Also, we have been trying to understand that a 10p coin is worth the same as ten penny coins (or the same as a 5p coin, two 2p coins and a penny coin). This is proving to be complicated! We found that using the Numicon 1,2,5 and 10 shapes helped us.

And look where we eventually got to with our learning! Fantastic!
